Today, 27'16". The day before yesterday, I thought I would break 27'; but not to be, alas. Two hundred yards from the end of the walk - and I was pumping! - the shoelaces on my right shoe came untied. So I had to stop and tie them. I was quick about it and I thought I might make up the time. But in bending over to tie the shoelace, I accidently (unknowingly) stopped my stopwatch timing the walk. So I have no real idea of whether I would have "broken 27". Oh, well; there'll be another day.
I had momentarily considered trying to finish the walk without stopping to tie the unraveling shoelace. However, I had a flashing image of me tripping myself and smashing to the pavement. Basho's sentiment was more noble than mine: "But though I might die on the road--on this journey to far and remote places of the beaten track--I was resigned from the beginning to the evanescence of human existence; and if I fall by the wayside and die in a ditch like a beggar, it will merely be my fate."
