Not just cities and suburbs have been hurt by the mortgage crisis; rural life has been significantly damaged, as well. Though most farms are prospering or above water, a scattered rural population is dependent on secondary agricultural employment, such as tractor sales and repair and other small manufacturers, which have lost business in the downturn.
