Wars end when soldiers with weapons occupy the contested ground, and all opponents who would take the ground from the soldiers are either killed or surrender. That's it. Air attacks do not win wars. Naval attacks do not win wars. Diplomacy does not win wars. Air, naval, and diplomacy can obtain truces, or effect the shape and timing of campaigns in which soldiers on the ground conquer and hold the ground, but only ground victories win wars. If Hamas gunmen control the ground in Gaza after this skirmish, then Hamas has won; if IDF soldiers control the ground in Gaza, Israel has won. It's that simple. Olmert didn't know the lessons of history in Lebanon; let's see if he knows them now.
