The Libya affair -- the attack on the Consulate and murders of the Ambassador and others at the American Consultate in Benghazi, the Administration's lying about the event (including the Vice President's lying), the President's repeated lying about the event, and the White House's coverup of the affair and the lying itself -- has been perceived, reported by journalists, and interpreted in largely a political context. The new State Department documents, released today, put the affair into a new setting. The affair is now a Constitutional Matter. The duties of the Presidential office, the management of the Executive Branch and the Cabinet, the conduct of the President personally, as well as the political handling of the affair by the White House, are all Constitutional issues. We need now to deal with the affair with the utmost Constitutional seriousness.
It is not enough to say that, in a few weeks, we will have a presidential election in which the American voters can vote what to do about the Libya affair. Even if the election fails to re-elect President Obama, he will continue in office until mid-January 2013. We now must ask the Constitutional question, whether this presidency should be allowed to continue for any length of time.
