Worldwide, organic agriculture is increasing its share of farmland under production, according to Economist. Since organic agriculture is less productive per acre than industrial commodity farming, overall agricultural productivity declines. Declining productivity leads to high prices, which hit the poor, who devote a larger proportion of their income to food costs than other consumers; e.g., the average Chinese household devotes 30% of its annual income to food, but the average US household devotes only 8% of its annual income to food (if I remember the numbers correctly).
