Tariffs have doubled the cost of sugar in the US. Tariffs protect US sugar producers and their farm workers, but the high cost of sugar has cramped the food processing industry for products that contain sugar. Between 1997 and 2002, about 10,000 jobs were lost in the sugar containing food processing industry, according to a study published in 2006. Companies moved their plants overseas to obtain lower sugar prices and lower labor costs.
